There's a wall in my basement my wife painted—a neon Chicago skyline sitting on a glowing grid. Everybody who sees it says the same word: "TRON." A few people just call it the tron wall. It's the look that's everywhere now—the neon grid, the chrome sunset, the palm-tree-and-Ferrari vibe on every other album cover and streaming thumbnail. So where did it actually come from? I pulled the thread, and it runs straight through the two things this whole room is about: old hardware, and Chicago.
Let me say up front: I'm no design historian. I'm a guy who liked the look enough to live with it on the wall, and then got curious about why it looks the way it does. What I found surprised me. The stuff that reads as "the future" in that mural isn't paint some artist dreamed up in 2015. Most of it is a picture of what real machines could actually draw in 1980—the same kind of gear that's sitting on my bench and in my cabinets right now.
The grid was a screen before it was a style
Start on the floor of the mural, that green grid running to the horizon. More than any single thing, that receding grid is what says "the future" to us. But it didn't start on an album cover. It started on hardware.
Sit down at a workbench and the literal glowing grid is right there: an oscilloscope, its graticule ruled across the face of the tube, the trace drawn in green phosphor because that's the color the old CRTs used for readability. Glowing green lines on black. That image is decades old, and it was never decoration—it was just what the instrument looked like.
Then the arcades made it move. Before pixels, some cabinets used vector monitors that drew glowing lines straight with the electron beam. Atari's Battlezone (1980) put you inside a wireframe world with mountains ruled along the horizon in bright green lines on black—a proto-outrun grid, running on real hardware, a full two years before anybody saw a light cycle. Asteroids, Tempest, and the vector Star Wars cabinet all drew the same way. The look felt like the future because the machine physically couldn't draw anything soft; it could only draw glowing lines.
Film crystallized it from there. Star Wars (1977) put a wireframe targeting grid in every kid's head, and TRON (1982) turned the perspective grid into the whole setting—the moment the grid officially became shorthand for "inside the machine." Even the green code raining down in The Matrix is the same trick: it's built to look like text on an old green-phosphor terminal. The grid keeps getting called futuristic, but it's really the ghost of a screen that actually existed.
The colors came off a graphics card
Look at the color pair everybody files under "neon eighties"—that electric cyan and magenta. Turns out a big piece of that is a hardware fingerprint too.
When IBM shipped the first PC color card, CGA, in 1981, its most-used graphics mode was locked to four colors: black, white, cyan, and magenta. That palette was a technical limitation, not an artistic choice, and it stamped itself onto countless early PC games. The exact colors we now read as glamorous '80s neon are, in large part, just what an IBM PC could put on a monitor. (There's a little Blade Runner blue mixed in from the movies, sure. But the core pair is a chip's default.) A constraint became a style—which, if you've ever worked inside old hardware, is the most '80s thing imaginable.
Then the warm half, the sunset
A cold grid needs a warm counterweight, and that's the striped sunset—the chrome-and-magenta sky you're heading toward. That sun is older than the games, too. It was a graphic-design motif long before synthwave: on t-shirts, on corporate logos, even on license plates—California rolled out its striped "sunset" plate in 1982. When Miami Vice hit in 1984, it bundled the warm version of all this into one look, the producers reportedly banning earth tones in favor of pure pastel over Art Deco and palm trees.
And the name? The whole aesthetic gets called "outrun" after Sega's OutRun, the 1986 arcade game that happened to put the grid and the sunset on one screen. That's all the word is—a title lifted off a cabinet. The look borrowed it and drove off.
So did synthwave invent this?
No, and this is the part I had backwards. The music revival people call synthwave is real, but it's new—it grew out of the mid-2000s French house scene, reaching back for old Italo-disco and the film scores of John Carpenter and Vangelis, and the neon-grid-and-sunset visuals didn't go fully mainstream until the 2010s. "Outrun" names the look, not the whole genre. So synthwave didn't build this. It fell in love with a decade it mostly didn't live through, went back, and adopted a look the hardware and the arcades had already made. The genuine article is '80s; the revival is recent. Both are real—they're just not the same age, which is worth keeping straight the next time the look gets sold back to us as brand-new.
Why Chicago belongs on that grid
Here's why my city belongs on an outrun horizon instead of the usual Miami beach: the arcade half of this look is, in a real sense, a Chicago story. Walk the room and read the marquees—Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, Rally-X—and you keep seeing one name under the title: Midway, of Chicago. Even the Mortal Kombat style cabinet in the corner is flying a Chicago flag, because MK was Midway too. Bally/Midway, Williams, Stern: this city was the coin-op capital, where a huge slice of the golden-age arcade actually got built.

So the neon skyline over the grid isn't a mismatch. It's the aesthetic sitting on top of the city that manufactured the machines the aesthetic came from. Sears Tower, the Hancock, Navy Pier's wheel, drawn in the same glowing line-work as the grid they stand on. That's the whole reason the room feels the way it does. The look was pointing at the future the entire time—the oscilloscope's grid, Battlezone's horizon, TRON's floor—and I finally drove out to meet it.
