Centipede at 45: the arcade classic, the woman who programmed it, and the board on my bench

Centipede turned 45 this summer. Atari released it in 1981, and by that summer the pastel bug-shooter was hitting arcades in force. It was designed by Ed Logg and Dona Bailey, and it became Atari's second-best-selling coin-op of all time, behind only Asteroids. Forty-five years on, it's still one of the most recognizable games ever made — and there's a board for it sitting on my bench.

The woman who programmed it

The part of the Centipede story that deserves the most retelling is Dona Bailey. She was the first woman to program and design a coin-operated arcade game — full stop.

The path there is the wild part. Bailey was writing 6502 assembly for General Motors — cruise-control and dashboard systems for Cadillacs — when a friend showed her Space Invaders in a bar. She realized it ran on the same microprocessor she already programmed for a living, quit GM, and moved to Sunnyvale to work for Atari. In the coin-op division she was the only woman on a four-person team, and she did roughly half the programming on Centipede.

She's also why it looks the way it does. Bailey is credited with Centipede's distinctive pastel color palette — which famously started as a happy accident when a technician was adjusting the cabinet, but Bailey saw it, loved it, and kept it. In an era when most arcade games were screaming neon, Centipede looked like spring. And it was deliberately designed to appeal beyond the typical arcade demographic, which worked: Centipede is documented as one of the first arcade games with a roughly 50/50 male/female player base — almost unheard of in 1981.

Bailey left the game industry in 1984, and only in recent years has she come back into the game-history conversation that's finally giving her her due.

Why it played different

Centipede was trackball-native. That spinning ball under your palm is a big part of why it felt so good — fast, fluid aiming that a joystick just can't match. Atari built tens of thousands of upright cabinets, and the game was one of the top grossers of its era.

The board on my bench

Here's where it gets personal. In my own arcade I play Centipede on a Millipede cabinet. The cabinet runs a Multipede kit — a multigame board that lets me switch between Centipede and Millipede without pulling the cabinet apart to swap real PCBs. Same trackball, same buttons, two games on one machine.

That setup has a happy side effect, and it comes down to the ball. Centipede shipped with a small 2.25-inch ball — the exact size and weight of a regulation billiard cue ball — which spins fast and makes the shooter feel twitchy and hypersensitive. Millipede got a bigger, heavier 3-inch ball, and Atari did that on purpose: the larger ball takes more effort to move the same distance on screen, adding friction that made the game physically harder and discouraged players from marathoning a single quarter. (Atari's trackballs went bigger still — the upright Missile Command used a 4.5-inch ball, the same one as its coin-op sports games.)

My cabinet wears the Millipede's bigger 3-inch ball, so I'm playing Centipede with a heavier, more deliberate roll instead of its famously twitchy feel. I greatly prefer it — though it's honestly a different game in the hands. Purists who want Centipede's fast, hypersensitive aim keep the small ball, and that's the beauty of it: your cabinet, your call.

And then there's the other Centipede in my shop — a real one. A while back I picked up a handful of dead Centipede boards on purpose: Centipede is beautifully documented, which makes it close to the perfect game to learn arcade-board repair on. A couple are fully back to life now; this one is still waiting its turn — a patient, not a player. But sitting on the bench, it gave me the chance to put 45-year-old silicon under the camera: the program ROMs, the discrete logic, the Fuji-stamped board ID, all exactly as Atari shipped it in 1981. When it's healthy, it'll earn its way into the cabinet — every board I bring back gets thoroughly play-tested in the Millipede before I call it done.

Every Atari had one

Part of what made Centipede a cultural fixture is that it landed on nearly everything. The first home ports arrived fast — the Atari 2600, 5200, and the 8-bit computers within a year or two — plus AtariSoft conversions for the Apple II, C64, ColecoVision, VIC-20, IBM PC, Intellivision, and TI-99/4A. (The Atari 7800 got its own version later, as a 1986 launch-era title.) The arcade was trackball-native, so most home ports had to fake that feel with a joystick — which is exactly why an Atari Trak-Ball was such a worthwhile add-on for the people who had one.

And don't sleep on Millipede (1982), the direct sequel — more legs, more bugs, more chaos.

Forty-five years later

Not many things from 1981 still work, still get played, and still feel good in the hand. Centipede does — and the fact that I can still pull a 1981 board onto the bench and study it chip by chip is its own small argument for why this stuff is worth keeping alive.

And it still gets played — hard. I keep a chalkboard of house high scores in my arcade, and my Centipede sits at 59,582 (the Millipede beside it at 171,887). I'll cop to the initials next to both, and forty-five years on I'm still chasing a better run.
